Title: Lost Boys: The Thirst
Directed by: Dario Piana (The Deaths of Ian Stone, They Only Come Out at Night)
Starring: Corey Feldman (You’ll Never Amount to Anything, Hooking Up, Lost Boys, Goonies), Tanit Phoenix (Death Race: Frankenstein Lives), Jamison Newlander (The Lost Boys, The Blob), Sean Cameron Michael and Matthew Dylan Roberts.
The Lost Boys: The Thirst starts out with veteran vampire hunter Edgar Frog (Feldman) finds himself destitute and almost friendless, he is beginning to think his life has hit rock bottom, but when wealthy vampire teen-romance novelist Gwen Liebling (Phoenix) offers him a small fortune to go on the vampire hunt of a lifetime and rescue her brother Peter from the Alpha Vampire D.J.”X” before the rave he’s throwing. It’s an offer he can’t refuse. So with the help of his friend Zoe, alligator wrestling, reality survival star Blake and his cameraman Claus, Edgar heads into a bloody battle to exterminate evil and save the entire human race.
Let me start by saying this… THIS IS THE SEQUEL THE FANS WANTED TO SEE!!!
My hat goes off to Corey Feldman. He pulled off, what I thought would be the hardest thing about doing a Frog Brothers movie. He played a grown up Edger Frog, without becoming a caricature of himself. When the film starts, as Feldman speaks, I was thinking “oh man, he is overdoing the voice.” But then they show a flashback (Brilliant!!) and I realized… That was EXACTLY how he was. The Frog Brothers were full of cliche one liners, over the top weapons and they are no nonsense Vampire Killers. And they stay very true to character, including some variations on some classic lines from the original!
I definitely don’t want to leave out Alan Frog, played perfectly by Jamison Newlander. He was just as important to make the film work, and my comments about Feldman apply to Jamison as well. I would have loved to see more from him in the movie but, without giving anything away, I understand why. The rest of the cast were a little plain but it didn’t slow anything down. It actually kind of fit with the style of the film.
All in all, if you were a fan of the original, you will really enjoy it. It is a movie about the Frog Brothers, so you can imagine that now that they are adults things are going to be way over the top… and it is. But in such an 1980’s over the top action movie style you can’t help but like it. But the most important thing is that you can totally erase the second movie (which I almost consider a remake) and The Thirst holds up fine. There are quite a bit of talk about things and people from the original and even some great flashbacks involving the late, great Corey Haim. As well as a very strong scene which now has a very different feel because of Haim’s tragic real life death. (Batman #14)
The movie moved at a perfect pace and has you laughing, jumping and anxious at times. I walked away thinking about how great this was and how good the the next one could be. I hope they are serious about the talk I am hearing about another movie and maybe a TV series… I can’t wait to see what else the Frog Brothers have in store for the undead.
