The producers of the critically-acclaimed but short-lived sitcom ‘Arrested Development’ are in talks with Netflix and Showtime to air several new original episodes of the series, EW is reporting. The show’s creator, Mitchell Hurwitz, has said that he wants to shoot nine to 10 episodes that would air next fall. The new episodes will update fans on what’s happening with the Bluth family since the series ended in 2006 on FOX.
Hurwitz also hopes the new ‘Arrested Development’ episodes, which will be produced by 20th Century Fox TV, will lead up to the anticipated movie based on the show. “I have been working on the screenplay for a long time and found that as time went by there was so much more to the story,” he added.
Ron Howard, who served as one of the producers of ‘Arrested Development,’ said “where everyone’s been for five years became a big part of the story. So, in working on the screenplay I found that even I just gave five minutes per character to that backstory, we were halfway through the movie before the characters got together.”
Hurwitz added that each episode will likely focus on one character. He also said that “we’ve been trying to put this more ambitious idea and I think we’re very close, the script is halfway done and we have to get the film companies on board.”
