New York, NY (April 9, 2008) – A green ogre, a rock star wannabe, an international spy of mystery, an upcoming love guru and now host of the 2008 MTV MOVIE AWARDS, Mike Myers takes the reins for the seventeenth annual show premiering LIVE on MTV, Sunday June 1 from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA. This is Myers’ second time hosting the alternative awards show. As previously announced, the 2008 MTV MOVIE AWARDS will be executive produced by Emmy Award winning producer Mark Burnett. With the legendary golden popcorn up for grabs in such eccentric categories as “Best Kiss,” “Best Villain,” and “Best Comedic Performance,” the 2008 MTV MOVIE AWARDS promises more over-the-top moments than ever before.
“I’ve spent the last year and a half of my life having the most fun ever working on ‘The Love Guru,’ and now I’m thrilled to have the chance to work with Judy McGrath, Van Toffler and Mark Burnett,” said Mike Myers. “Hosting the MTV Movie Awards is like a party, but without having to do beer runs in your mom’s mini van; we do beer runs in Will Smith’s four-story motor home.”
“Mike Myers blew us away last time he hosted the MTV Movie Awards with his lord of the dance and over the top musical productions,” said Van Toffler, President, MTV Networks Music, Logo and Films Group. “He keeps creating iconic film characters that have been etched in the minds of MTV’s audiences forever. ‘The Love Guru’ is sure to spur yet another cultural movement, so we’re elated to have Mike back as our host.”
The celeb-filled event is MTV’s irreverent nod to the typical awards shows celebrating the year’s best in movies, stand-out musical performances and more. Hailed for clever, one-of-a-kind film parodies, sexy lip-locking moments from the likes of Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen, and outrageous acceptance speeches such as Mike Myers’ ode to Austin Powers with a mojo-induced dance number, the MTV Movie Awards has produced some of the most unforgettable and outrageous moments in award show history!
Mike Myers, star of the upcoming film “The Love Guru” in theaters June 20, is one of the most multifaceted performers of his generation, having brought a distinct array of characters to life on both film and television. For his groundbreaking work on “Saturday Night Live,” Myers was nominated for an Emmy for “Best Performance in a Comedy or Variety Show” and won an Emmy for “Best Writing for Comedy or Variety Show.” Myers successfully brought his popular SNL character, Wayne Campbell, to the big screen in 1992 with “Wayne’s World,” followed a year later with “Wayne’s World 2”. On the heels of the “Wayne’s World” empire, Myers appeared in a range of films including “54,” for which he earned critical acclaim. In 1997, Myers wrote, produced, and starred in his first of three Austin Power’s films, “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.” This was followed in 1999 by “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” and in 2002 by “Austin Powers in Goldmember”. Additionally, Myers is recognized as the lead voice in the 2001 Dreamworks animated feature “Shrek.” The tale continued in 2004 with “Shrek 2,” and the third installment, “Shrek the Third” can now be seen in theatres nationwide.
