Harold Ramis confirmed, in an email to Chicago Tribune writer Mark Caro, that “the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent”, opening up the possibility of the classic Ghostbusters cast showing up in some aspect in the long-rumored Ghostbusters III. On September 4th Variety reported that Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, co-exec producers of the TV show The Office, have started on a script for Ghostbusters III. And despite Murray’s long-time reluctance to be involved in further Ghostbusters works after the second film as opposed to his former co-stars, it appears, according to the email, that he is willing to be involved in this project so far.
Ramis, who co-wrote the original film with co-star Dan Aykroyd, says in his email that the original Ghostbusters would perhaps be involved in some sort of mentoring capacity in the new film. Ghostbusters, starring Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, came out in 1984 and was a hit with critics and fans, grossing the second-highest profit in 1984 only behind Beverly Hills Cop and garnering two Oscar nominations. It was followed by Ghostbusters II, which still stands in the top-10 highest-grossing weekend openers when it opened in June of 1989.
