Filmmaker David Cronenberg and composer Howard Shore have reunited to create their beloved horror film, The Fly, into an opera. This is the first time in history that a cinematic work has been turned into a classical opera.

The Fly Opera Score

The Fly Opera lifts its curtain to the opening score from the 1986 movie and two and half hours of original music by Shore, ends just as the film does.

Synopsis
Scientist Seth Brundle (Daniel Okulitch) invents a pair of teleportation modules and decides to test them out himself, but when a household fly sneaks in at the last second, Seth’s DNA gets scrambled with the insect’s and mutates into a disgusting man/fly hybrid.

The opera version is divided into two acts:
-Act One focuses on the relationship between Seth and reporter Veronica Quaife (Ruxandra Donose).
-Act Two concentrates on Seth’s new human-fly transformation.

The Fly Opera Still

According to Dread Central, the opera is very close to Cronenberg’s film and even repeats whole lines from the script. The only difference is that it takes place in the 1950s period of the original Vincent Price film.

The Fly Opera is currently on-stage at the L.A. Opera through September. For tickets and other info, visit their website.
