Guy Ritchie, the acclaimed filmmaker behind “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”, “Snatch” and the recent “RocknRolla” is starting principal photography on his “Sherlock Holms” film in London, according to Warner Bros.

The film, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the eccentric, antagonistic, and brilliant detective made famous in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, first starting in 1887. Aided by his loyal friend, war veteran, skilled doctor, and documentarian, Dr. Watson, Holmes became famous in print for his almost impossible acumen of knowledge, allowing him to make obscure but staggeringly accurate leaps of logic to solve seemingly impossible cases the police cannot. The character had his final original adventure in 1914 though other authors have continued to create original stories based on Conan Doyle’s characters, and there have been several other film and TV adaptations.

Besides Downey Jr. as the famed detective, Watson will be played by Jude Law, the new, mysterious, adversary Blackwood by Mark Strong, Irene Adler, the female spy who is Holmes’ only match and love interest, by Rachel McAdams, and Watson’s love interest Mary, by Kelly Reilly.

Joel Silver, Lienel Wigram, Dan Lin, and Susan Downey are producing the film, distributed by Warner and Village Roadshow Productions in select areas. The script is based on an original comic story adaptation of Conan Doyle’s characters by Lionel Wigram.
