The writers of the acclaimed summer smash of 2008, “Iron Man”, starring Robert Downey Jr, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who are rumored to be also penning “Iron Man 2”, are agreeing with a statement made by “The Incredible Hulk” director Louis Leterrier about the future of Marvel Studio’s “Avengers” movie. Leterrier told MTV News back in June that the Avengers movie, tentatively predicted for 2011, should fall back on the classic Avengers origin story of fighting the Hulk.
Fergus said “I hope ‘The Avengers’ embraces [using the Hulk as the villain], […] You don’t want like 10 super-badass good guys fighting together. Where’s the fun in that? Let’s break it off a little. Friends or colleagues who become enemies is always an interesting thing because you know it’s based on love and friendship and that’s always the worst thing to have turn bad — is someone you actually care about and someone you actually believe in.”
Both this summer’s “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk”, starring Downey Jr. and Edward Norton respectively, are the first entirely Marvel Studios ever, and meant to start tying the franchises together to culminate in a crossover “Avengers” movie. Robert Downey Jr. even had a cameo role in “Hulk” as Iron Man/Tony Stark, hinting at the upcoming connections.
The Avengers first appeared in 1963 and the original story involved Iron Man, Ant-Man, The Wasp, and Thor coming together by chance to battle the Hulk and then later, Thor’s brother, the trickster Norse god Loki. The title has been a consistent part of Marvel Comics since then as one of their flagship books. It continues to this day under several titles, from “Mighty Avengers” to “Secret Avengers” to “Avengers: The Initiative”.
