While there is no official word on this, Hollywood rumors are indicating today that Rachel Weisz could be tapped to portray Selina Kyle, aka The Catwoman, in the third Nolan Batman movie, a sequel to this past summer’s smash hit “The Dark Knight”.
While Warner Bros will not comment on the rumor or even on the state of any pre-production on another Batman movie, others indicate a strong possibility about the Weisz rumor. The rumor is the latest in expected casting rumors for what would be the third in director Christopher Nolan’s take on the DC Comics character, including Philip Seymour Hoffman as the bird-themed gangster The Penguin, and Johnny Depp as the puzzle-obsessed thief known as the Riddler.
“The Dark Knight”, starring Christian Bale, the late Heath Ledger, and Michael Caine, has grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide, breaking box office records, garnering critical and commercial praise, and earning Ledger a posthumous Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of the deranged clown-faced villain known as the Joker.
The Catwoman is a DC Comics character first introduced in 1940, in “Batman” #1. First known as “The Cat”, she was a bullwhip-wielding female burglar with a cat-motif outfit who has evolved into a more anti-hero character and as the on-again, off-again love interest of Batman himself, portrayed by many writers and thought of by many fans as his one true love. Catwoman has been portrayed in almost all media adaptations of Batman, and in live-action having been previously played by Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Eartha Kitt in the 1960’s “Batman” TV series, Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992’s “Batman Returns”, and by Halle Berry in 2004’s “Catwoman”, though the character there was only loosely based on the comic character and not known as Selina Kyle.
