Disney has picked up-and-coming actor Garrett Hedlund to star in the Joseph Kosinksi-directed “Tron,” the sequel to the 1982 Disney cult science fiction classic. Hedlund has appeared in “Troy,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Four Brothers,” “Eragon,” and “Georgia Rule.”
Hedlund will play the lead, who finds himself pulled into the world of a computer and retracing the steps of Kevin Flynn from the first film, played by Jeff Bridges, who is reprising the role of Flynn. Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have also been cast in the project, which was known as both “Tron 2” and “Tr2n” before its latest naming.
“Tron”, released in 1982, is a sci-fi film by Disney, about a computer programmer named Flynn that ends up trapped within a digitized world of a nefarious corporate entity’s mainframe, and must fight to survive and escape while trying to prove that the company stole his work years before. Its digital effects at the time were and still are considered groundbreaking at the time, and talks of a sequel have been rumored since 1999.
The second “Tron”, being produced by Sean Bailey, Steven Lisberger, and Jeff Silver, is aiming to begin shooting in the spring of 2009.
