Mickey Rourke, coming off of the rounding success of “The Wrestler”, is in talks with Marvel Entertainment to be in 2010’s “Iron Man 2”, the sequel to the 2008 summer blockbuster “Iron Man”. Sam Rockwell is also reportedly in talks with the studio about a role in the film, about the playboy industrialist who after a terrorist attack leaves him near-death, crafts a suit of armor to save himself and eventually become a superhero.
Rourke, whose previous comic-related work includes his portrayal of the brutal Marv in the big-screen adaptation of Frank Miller’s “Sin City” in 2005, is in discussions to play the Crimson Dynamo, a heavily tattooed Russian arms dealer and an “evil” opposite to Iron Man because he battles the iron Avenger in his own suit of powered armor that is nuclear-powered. Which role Rockwell will play has yet to be disclosed by Marvel but is rumored to be up for the role of ruthless businessman Justin Hammer. There have been no official comments from Marvel.
The Crimson Dynamo appeared in 1963 in Marvel’s “Tales Of Suspense” as a Communist Russian counterpart to Tony Stark/Iron Man, and various incarnations of the character through time have generally followed that concept of being Russian government versions of Iron Man that have occasionally still clashed with the character. The latest incarnation of the Dynamo recently appeared in an issue of “Hulk” as well as “Iron Man: Director of SHIELD”.
“Iron Man 2” will star Robert Downey Jr, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, will be directed by Jon Favreau, and has a scheduled release date of May 7th, 2010.
