Superherohype.com is reporting that the scheduled Tuesday January 20th court conference between Fox Studios’ and Warner Bros’ attorneys has been cancelled, fueling rumors about a possible settlement in the “Watchmen” case between Warner Bros and Fox.
Fox initially sued Warner last February claiming the studio infringed on their right to make the comic book adaptation, and that Warner’s claim to the rights for the adaptation were in violation of Fox’s earlier ones.
In December, when federal judge Gary A. Feess ruled that Fox has distribution rights to the film, Warner Bros faced the unfortunate prospect of having the film’s release blocked.
Despite this, Watchmen’s official release date is still listing it as hitting theaters March 6th, 2009.
“Watchmen”, based on the hit comic that ran between 1986 and 1987 by Alan Moore and David Gibbons, is about a bleak future world where the Cold War never ended, and former and renegade heroes gather after one of their former colleagues is found murdered. A study in the protagonists’ flawed personalities and considered the beginning of the “post-modern” take on superheroics in comics, the characters discover a growing conspiracy with roots in their ranks going back to the previous generation of “classic” heroes that not only threatens them, but also the entire world.
