According to a listing from the Hollywood Reporter on a slew of new pilots shooting in the upcoming future, actress Jaime Ray Newman has landed one of the three leads in ABC “Eastwick,” alongside Veronica Cartwright. Cartwright originally appeared in the 1987 film version of the tale, which also starred Cher, Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Susan Sarandon. Newman has previously appeared in the TV series “Supernatural” and “Stargate: Atlantis”.

The pilot will be based on John Updike’s 1984 novel about a coven of witches in the fictional Rhode Island town of Eastwick in the 1960’s, who are plagued with troubles when a mysterious, Lucifer-like man named Daryl Van Horne appears in their midst, takes them all as lovers, and spreads discord and jealousy. The witches finally band together to cast Van Horne from their lives using their magic, after having been tricked by him into causing mischeif in their town with magic. The book’s sequel was Updike’s last novel, “The Widows Of Eastwick”, and was published in 2008.

The book has had several adaptations besides the more famous 1987 film, with two stage adaptations in 2000 and 2007 and a TV pilot in 2002 starring Marcia Cross, Kelly Rutherford, and Lori Loughlin.

No other news on the pilot has been announced yet.
