New Line plans to return to 3-D and the center of the earth with a sequel to 2008’s “Journey To The Center Of The Earth”, starring Brendan Fraser as volcanologist Trevor Anderson, who along with his nephew and their guide fell through a tunnel to a Jules Verne-esque world within the world, while searching for his brother. Loosely based on the original book by author Jules Verne in 1864, the film is arguably a sequel to Verne’s story, and was shot in 3D, one of several to come out in recent years using this technology.

The film’s initial concept for a sequel involved the lost city of Atlantis, implied at the end of the film, though studio execs say that with several other Atlantis-related projects in the works that concept was nixed So far no particular new idea released about this sequel so far. Contrafilm’s Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson are returning to produce alongside Walden Media and Charlotte Huggins. Eric Brevig will be returning to direct as well as develop the script. New Line will be fully financing the movie this time, compared to the co-financing deal it had with Walden on the first.
