Coming Soon has a sneak-peak at the first teaser poster for the upcoming film “Sherlock Holmes” starring Robert Downey Jr as the famous British detective and tenant of the equally-famous Baker Street address. You can check it out below.

Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, first appeared in 1887 and has become a literary staple since then not only in detective fiction but in literature in general. A brilliant and eccentric private detective, his wide range of knowledge and genius deductive reasoning helped him solve various almost impossible cases and adventures, with his faithful friend, sidekick and “biographer”, as all of the stories of Holmes are written as if dictated by him, Dr. John Watson, at his side. It’s arguable that Doyle’s character helped to literally create the entire genre of detective fiction in literature.

The character has been portrayed in various media since his creation, including non-Doyle-penned books, TV series, films, comic books, and animated series. The character is the most-portrayed fictional character portrayed in film ever, followed by Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. Some classic names attached to the character include Basil Rathbone, and Sir Peter Cushing.

“Sherlock Holmes”, directed by Guy Richie and stars Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, and Eddie Marsan, is in theaters December 25, 2009.
