Michael Chabon, author of “The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier & Clay” and “The Yiddish Policeman’s Union”, has signed on to rewrite the script for Disney’s big-screen adaption of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars”, the first book in the “John Carter Warlord Of Mars” / “Barsoom” saga.
Chabon has previously also worked on the script for “Spider-Man 2”, though only about a third of his material made it to the finished film.
Burroughs’ “Barsoom” saga began 1911, and detail a series of adventures primarily about an inhabitant of Earth named John Carter, who periodically finds himself transported to a fantasty world that is apparently on the planet Mars where he becomes an adventurer and swashbuckling hero. The character and world he operates in have been adapted into several comic book titles and appearances, as well as literary “cameos” such as a reference to a character in Robert E. Heinlein’s “The Number Of The Beast” being either a namesake or a descendant of Carter’s.
