“Dead Snow” director and co-writer Tommy Wirkola is helming “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” a new take on the classic child’s tale, the Hollywood Reporter is reporting.
Wirkola pitched the idea to Gary Sanchez Productions of the now-grown siblings having become witch hunters, 15 years after escaping the Gingerbread House. Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, the head honchos of Gary Sanchez Productions, jumped at the idea of bringing the project, described as a sort of “Shaun of the Dead” and “Evil Dead 2” comedy action.
“The idea is, they’ve grown up and they hunt witches, […] It’s a hybrid sort of old-timey feeling, yet there’s pump-action shotguns. Modern technology but in an old style. We heard it and we were just like, ‘That’s a freakin’ franchise! You could make three of those!’ ” Kevin Messick is producing, alongside McKay, Ferrell and Chris Henchy for Paramount.
