Box Office Mojo is listing a new release date for Martin Campbell’s big-screen adaptation of “Green Lantern” for DC, moving it from December 17th 2010 to June 17th 2011.
Whether or not this will affect plans to start shooting in Australia in September or if the move is to give Campbell more time for post-production and FX is unknown. So far no casting decisions have been made for the film.
The Green Lantern premiered in 1940, created by Bill Finger and Martin Nodell for “All-American Comics”. Hal Jordan, a test pilot and arguably the most well-known character to use the name, debuted in 1959, which is also when the concept of the Green Lantern as a member of an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps first appeared. The Green Lantern uses a weapon called a power ring, which is charged from a lantern-shaped battery, hence the name. The ring allows for flight, energy-based powers, and the ability form solid constructs in any shape the wielder can imagine, driven only by willpower. Green Lanterns are chosen for their ability to “overcome great fear”.
