Marvel has announced that Natalie Portman has joined the cast of the big-screen adaptation of the classic title “Thor” as Jane Foster, the love interest of the Norse Thunder God cast to Earth from Asgard to learn humanity.

Also confirmed are Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding Thor and, as previously announced, Tom Hiddleston as the devious Loki, the trickster god and half-brother to Thor who desires the throne of Asgard to himself.

Marvel’s official synopsis of the film says that it will focus on “The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.”

“Thor” will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and has a release date of May 20th, 2011.
