Oh man… I just saw World’s Greatest Dad. This film is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. It follows no formula and pushes the limits to well beyond any normal sense of decency. This is one of the most unbelievably amazing movies I have ever seen.
First off, the trailers that I have seen DO NOT do the film justice. Most trailers show the best parts of the movie just to get you in. Not this one! The trailers actually lack key points that leave you very surprised. I beg anyone who wants to see this: Do not read about it. People will give away spoilers. Bobcat Goldthwait is amazing in his story telling and emotional cinematography. Robin Williams has topped some of his best roles with this part. It has been a long time since an actor has made me feel so many different things in the course of one film.
So here is the best I can do: Lance Clayton (a masterful Robin Williams) is a man who has learned to just accept things. He has always dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but for now, with five non-published books, he passes the time as a poetry teacher. His arrogant, sexual deviant son Kyle (played perfectly by Daryl Sabara) is an ungrateful punk who consistently disrespects the people around him. Lance has a hidden relationship with Claire (Alexie Gilmore), a fellow teacher at his school, but she doesn’t want to get serious or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating. After a major scandal in Lances’ life, he decides to cover it up. Which will lead him to the only… Ok wait, this is too much information.
There are some movies that I can’t review as well as I want to, because, it will give too much away. This is definitely one of those films. The movie is a dark comedy that is nothing like you have ever seen before. I hate classifying this film. It is amazing. It is a smart & dark film that, I can almost guarantee, will win awards.
So just in case I didn’t make myself clear, go watch this movie. It will be releasing Aug 21st at select theaters. It is also on Video On-Demand for a limited time right now.
Go see it or order it!!! World’s Greatest Dad is the best film of the year!
