British director Stephen Frears, according to a report by Variety, has officially signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of “Tamara Drewe”, the acclaimed graphic novel by Posy Simmonds. Moira Buffini wrote the script.
Gemma Arterton is attached to play the protagonist Drewe, a woman who returns to her small hometown and begins to stir up dark passions amongst the other residents of the village. Dominic Cooper, Roger Allam, Luke Evans, Bill Camp and Tamsin Greig are all also on board.
Simmonds’ “Tamara Drewe” novel is actually a collection of comic strips that initially were first published in the U.K. newspaper “The Guardian”, and the comic is a re-imagining of “Far From The Madding Crowd” by Thomas Hardy.
