Justin Haythe (“Revolutionary Road”) is in negotiations to write the script for the Walt Disney adaptation of the classic character “The Lone Ranger.”
Jerry Bruckheimer is producing, and Johnny Depp is attached as the Ranger’s sidekick, the Indian Tonto.
Haythe would be replacing “Pirates of the Caribbean” scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who have previously tackled adapting the story.
The Lone Ranger was once a Texas Ranger whose group of Rangers were pursuing a gang of outlaws who abushed the Rangers, leaving them all for dead. The Indian scout Tonto found the Ranger, the lone survivor, and helped him recover. The Ranger then dons a black mask and tames a white stallion named Silver to ride, and teams up with Tonto to get revenge and bring the gang, as well as various other criminals, to justice.
