Clearly a comedy starring Rob Corddry isn’t bulletproof, but someone out there recognized the depths of his hilarity in Hot Tub Time Machine and hired the former The Daily Show with Jon Stewart correspondent to join the cast of the dramedy Butter. The film already boasts big names including Jennifer Garner and Kate Hudson, but Corddry’s comedic prowess is a welcomed addition.
Just as notable as the cast is the script. Jason Micallef’s piece found itself in the #3 position on the 2008 Black List. It involves an Iowa woman (Garner) hoping to take the butter carving title that once belonged to her husband. When a young orphan girl (Yara Shahidi) shacks up with local family, she discovers she has a knack for butter carving herself and threatens to steal the title. Ty Burell is on board as well, taking the role once thought to belong to Jim Carrey, that of Garner’s husband.
According to the LA Times, shooting is set to begin later this month, but with The Weinstein Co. as the film’s financial backer, delays aren’t out of the question. However, I’m really hoping that’s not the case because this sounds like it could really be something special. My only concern is Jim Field Smith behind the lens. Hopefully with a more notable script in his hands than that of She’s Out of My League, he’ll show us he has some serious talents to offer.
