We get to watch the best of the best in film step up to the podium and accept honors a number of times during awards season, but why not the worst of the worst? The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has taken pride in honoring the pure crap that makes it to the big screen since 1981, but not once has the general pulbic been able to watch the show live. Well, if the winner in the Worst Actress category decides to follow in Sandra Bullocks footsteps, we’ll have the opportunity to see it for ourselves, because the 31st ceremony will be broadcast on February 26th, 2011.
Unfortunately, that’s all the press release posted on the organization’s website reveals. There isn’t even mention of a network. The link to the release is titled “Razzies Ink Deal to Shop TV Broadcast of 2011 Awards,” so perhaps the plan isn’t even guaranteed. However, I’d imagine the union will be a win win deal for both parties, so won’t be difficult to solidify. So what about a host? They better get a comedian who can really get em’ where it hurts. The Razzies is prime time for poking fun at the year’s losers, so they must go all out.
This could also be the year that celebrity attendance could spike. We live in a time where people would do just about anything for a moment in the spotlight, even if it means honoring your own dishonor and taking home a stinker statue yourself. Even if the Razzies evolve into a night not to be missed throughout the Hollywood community, it’ll always stand out as being the sole show devoted to pushing the lowest of the low even lower. Hopefully the show’s producers, Eric Ortner, Maureen Murphy and Razzies founder John Wilson will seize the creative opportunity and make this Oscar Eve tradition even more enjoyable.
