The MacGruber UK poster has arrived and it’s exactly what you’d expect, our bumbling hero standing in front of a fiery mess. On May 21st, MacGruber (Will Forte) leaves Saturday Night Live behind for a stint on the big screen. It’s ten years after the passing of his wife and he’s ditched his fighting lifestyle, but when he finds out his nemesis, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), is threatening the country with a nuclear warhead, he knows he must report for duty. The man to MacGruber’s right is Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and you may recognize the lady to his left as Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig), his right hand woman from the SNL sketches.
The enflamed background makes the UK poster pop far more than the domestic version. My only gripe is that the touch-up work is quite evident here, perhaps due to the aforementioned asset. But regardless of the quality of MacGruber’s promotional material, it’ll always be associated with SNL and that makes me inherently skeptical of the film. Past SNL-inspired movies haven’t faired particularly well and further diminishing my hopes for MacGruber, the skit it’s based on isn’t very funny. But, hey, there’s nothing better than a nice surprise. If the guy can diffuse a bomb with a battery, bottle cap, rubber band and anal lubricant, he’s got to be able to pull this off. Oh, wait; he never actually diffuses the bomb, does he?
