The time has come; Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is as real as ever yet again. After his disastrous first go-around, you’d think Gilliam would have a hard time rounding up talent to give the project another shot. Not only did he solidify plans with Robert Duvall to be his new Don Quixote late last year, but now, according to Empire, he sealed the deal with Ewan McGregor for the Sancho Panza inspired role.
The part has undergone loads of speculation. Ever since the 2000 failure, Gilliam carried on the idea that his movie would eventually happen and strung Johnny Depp along for the ride. Originally, Depp was set to play Toby Grisoni, a marketing executive who travels back in time where Quixote believes he’s Panza. It wasn’t until recently that that rumor was completely quashed, leaving the role of Panza up for grabs.
Late April, Duvall admitted that Gilliam’s six-month search for the right Panza was delaying the project. Apparently Gilliam went for Colin Farrell who refused the role and ultimately settled on two potentials. One of these options is a potential no more; McGregor is the real thing.
What still isn’t quite confirmed is the storyline. It’s been assumed that Gilliam would go with the same concept as the original production, but just recently, Duvall mentioned some serious updates. He explained that the focus of the film is a shoemaker who plays Don Quixote in a commercial and starts to believe that he really is the character. If this is true, McGregor will not be playing the same role originally assigned to Depp.
Now that Gilliam has his Quixote, his Panza, a $20 million dollar budget and a September start date, hopefully more details will surface soon.
