Julia Roberts is showing her support for the performance by her ‘Eat Pray Love’ co-star Javier Bardem in his new Spanish film ‘Biutiful,’ Entertainment Weekly (EW) is reporting. On January 4 in Los Angeles, the Academy Award-winning actress hosted a screening of ‘Biutiful,’ in which he portrays a single father who tries to reconcile with a past love and secure a good life for his children in the wake of his impending death.
At the screening, to which a select industry crowd was invited, including Kyle MacLachlan and Robert Forster, Roberts spoke exclusively with EW.com writer Dave Karger. She addressed the lack of award nomination recognition for Bardem’s otherwise highly-praised performance. Roberts said she feels Bardem didn’t receive a SAG or Golden Globe nomination because the movie, which opens nationwide on January 28, just hasn’t gotten the exposure yet. “Especially n this particular season, people don’t hunt for things. They just take what you throw in their face,” she added.
Of Bardem’s performance, Roberts told Karger that she feels it’s Oscar-worthy because “he’s so raw and completely open to sharing every emotion this character has…when I watched it I had to keep stopping and saying, ‘Okay, this is not actually happening to (Javier).” Roberts added that she was stunned by his performance because it’s rare for “a man to expose himself so deeply.” She also said that she has a great appreciation for what he went through to perform this role.
