For the longest, word had been circling around various movie sites that Ridley Scott was working on a prequel to the sci-fi classic Alien series. Now, according to CinemaBlend and Deadline, Scott has redirected his prequel idea into an original film being titled Prometheus. The film also has The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace set to star. There’s also a release date in place; the film is expected to hit theaters March 9, 2012.
According to what Scott told Deadline, there will be similarities of Alien in Prometheus, but the themes tackled will be, “unique, large, and provocative.”
Writer Damon Lindelof also told Deadline why he was drawn to the project. “In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects.”
Rapace will play a scientist named Elizabeth Shaw. Another character, “Vickers”, has not been cast yet, but Deadline has speculated that Angelina Jolie or Charlize Theron might play the part. There are five other parts for the film that need filling, but Fox has stated that all parts will be filled soon.
Prometheus is expected to be in theaters sometime in 2013.
