The little Marvel movie that could seems to be slowly gathering more steam. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “V” actress Morena Baccarin is among several actresses shortlisted to audition for the “Avengers” movie. Other actresses include Jessica Lucas, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cobie Smulders.

The part Marvel is trying to fill is the role of a key member in Nick Fury’s Avengers team. It is speculated that the role is that of The Wasp/Janet van Dyne, but Marvel declined to comment to The Hollywood Reporter.

In any event, it would seem that they’re searching for a specific look to the character–all actresses listed in the report have olive or tan skin, dark hair and classic, yet slightly modern, features. After looking at pictures of the Wasp, it would appear that all these women fit her design nearly perfect if not dead on. If I can play couch casting director, I would immediately cast Baccarin or Smulders, that is if they are casting for the Wasp.

“The Avengers” is based on the Marvel property about a team of superheroes spearheaded by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). According to IMDB, all of the principal actors from other Marvel movies are slated appear–Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Don Cheadle as Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson. The only change in actors comes in the form of Mark Ruffalo playing Bruce Banner with Lou Ferrigno taking up the “Hulk” mantle again, this time providing the character’s voice. The film, written and directed by Joss Whedon, is expected to be released May 4, 2012.
