Entertainment Weekly and MTV Movies Blog is reporting that Tom Cruise has secured the role of aging rock star Stacee Jaxx in the movie adaptation of the highly-successful, Tony-nominated Broadway show, “Rock of Ages.”Cruise’s involvement with the film dates back to October, when he was first being courted with the role.
Cruise’s character, played by Mitchell Jarvis in the Broadway show and MiG Ayessa in the U.S. tour show, sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive”. He also has singing parts in other ensemble songs such as “I Wanna Know What Love Is”. His character is also an egotistical womanizer, so it’s fitting that in the Broadway show he’d be on the receiving end of a lap dance as well as some fisticuffs, befitting any proper rocker.
There’s also a rumor circling around that Anne Hathaway may play the role of the journalist determined to destroy Jaxx’s career, only to end up falling in love with him, but of course, none of this is certain, and it certainly depends on her filming schedule, which is affected due to her role as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises”.
The film adaptation is expected to be directed by Adam Shankman, the director and choreographer behind films such as “Hairspray”. He also choregraphed musical dance scenes in films like “Casper”, “George of the Jungle”, “Blast From the Past”, “Catch Me if You Can”, “The Wedding Plan”, and many more.
