The studio announced today that Steve Carell will star in “Dogs of Babel’, a drama being made by Mandate Pictures. Carell will also produce the film along with Heyday Film’s David Heyman, Dooma Wendschuh and Corey May of Sekretagent Productions. There currently is no director, but that is supposed to change very soon.
The film, an adaptation of a novel by Carolyn Parkhurst, follows a linguistics professor (Carell) who finds his wife dead in their backyard. Even though the police rule the death an accident, the professor refuses to believe it to be so; instead, he sets out to teach his dog how to talk in order to figure out what happened to his wife, as the dog is the only witness to her death.
This won’t be Carell’s first time experimenting with dramatic roles. His role in “Little Miss Sunshine” was, while slightly comedic in an indie sort of way, still had very dramatic tones. In any event, subtlety was called for in order to make the role work. Even his role in “The Office” requires dramatic readings sometimes. And from what most people say, dramatic acting is easier than comedic acting, so if Carell is as polished as he is at comedic acting, he’s bound to be awesome in a dramatic role.
