If you’re directly involved in it, the day and night surrounding the Oscars must be loads of fun. You would figure that between the ridiculous amounts of celebrities, awards, food and drinks that you get at the after parties, that specific Sunday out of the year must be absolutely wonderful.
Perhaps it’s even a pinch more so for actor Josh Brolin. He wasn’t nominated this year for an Academy Award, but he came up and presented in a funky-looking tuxedo. You figure he worked his magic with that outfit or gave one great pitch, because now his next project happens to be “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
Brolin is developing the project with Warner Bros. Pictures under his Brolin Productions banner. He scooped up writers Michele and Kieran Mulroney (“Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows”) to pen the script, but will the second half of his casting wish come true? He’s trying to lure in director Tim Burton to possibly helm the project. That’s going to be a little tricky to do, mainly because he’s not only has his directing hand in the “Dark Shadows” film with Johnny Depp, but he’s also in the middle of shooting his feature-length animated film “Frankenweenie.” When it comes to Burton, it’s a matter of managing time than anything else.
The script will be based off the novel by Victor Hugo, centering on the hunchback bell-ringer Quasimodo who tragically falls for a gorgeous gypsy named Esmerelda. There’s been several depictions of “Hunchback” that have popped up both in television and film. Maybe it’s the nostalgic story book telling scent that’s floating in the air, enrapturing most of the studios to make movies out of classic tales, but whatever it may be it’s not wearing off anytime soon.
