When it comes to the climate of video game sales in comparison to movies, the electronic interactive stories are winning by a lot. It’s no wonder that Hollywood has been trying to get their hands on that blossoming entertainment medium of a gold mine for years. Although Hollywood has been successful a couple of times with the transition (“Resident Evil”) there’s been a few that can never get past the starting gate (“Max Payne”).
Perhaps Screen Gems thinks they have a sure-fire hit on their hands with “Devil May Cry.” The rights to the extremely popular supernatural Capcom property were picked up today by the powerful production company. The video game, created by Hideki Kamiya, focuses on Dante who avenges his mother’s death by destroying demons.
The hack and slash game will be penned for the big screen by Kyle Ward. It’s a surprise that Screen Gems picked up Ward to pen “Devil May Cry,” mainly because neither of his two recent feature-length scripts have yet to be filmed. Those projects happen to be “Fiasco Heights” and another upcoming video game adaptation entitled “Kane & Lynch.”
“Devil May Cry” has been a large winning property on the Capcom area, chucking out five games that have sold well more than over ten million copies around the world. Let’s see if maybe Screen Gems can take “Devil” and add onto the pile of successful video game adaptations.
