Diane Lane has been cast to play Superman’s Earth mom Martha Kent, according to GeekTyrant. Snyder said Lane is the perfect choice to portray the motherly love and wisdom Martha shows toward Clark:
“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
I would have to agree with Snyder that Lane is a great choice for the mom of Clark Kent/Superman. Even though nowadays, Lane is known for her roles in way too many rom-coms, she does have great dramatic chops, shown in 2002’s “Unfaithful”. And, just like the thinking behind choosing Henry Cavill to play the Man of Steel, Lane is sure to provide the role with freshness and zest, something that the “Superman” franchise surely needs in order to be able to step up and compete with Nolan’s “Batman” universe.
The reboot of “Superman”, called “Superman: The Man of Steel“, is also rumored to star Kevin Costner possibly as Jonathan Kent and Viggo Mortensen possibly as General Zod, according to GeekTyrant. The film is slated for a December 2012 release.
