Phil Collins, who has risen to fame as the drummer and singer for the group Genesis and as a successful solo artist, has announced that he will be ending his music career, www.eonline.com is reporting. He is citing medical issues for his decision to leave music, saying that “years of drumming resulted in a variety of health issues, including hearing loss, a dislocated vertebrae and nerve damage” in his hands.

The news comes after Collins has won both praise and criticism. He has won seven Grammys and an Oscar. As a solo artist, he also has 13 hit singles and has sold more than 150 million albums. However, critics and other musicians have also panned much of his work. Of the criticism, Collins told FHM that “I’m sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn’t mean it to happen like that. It’s hardly surprising that people grew to hate me.”

Collins first tried to retire in 2009 when he moved to Switzerland with his two sons. On Genesis’ website, he even said that he stopped playing the drums and the piano because he dislocated a vertebrae in his neck.
