We’re just about a month away from the Tribeca Film Festival 2011 and event information is pouring in. We know Cameron Crowe’s The Union is kicking things off with an outdoor screening followed by a performance by Elton John and the selection of films showing in the festival’s World Narrative and Documentary Competition. Now it’s time to unveil the selections for the Spotlight and Cinemania sections.
Senior programmer Genna Terranova explained, “This year’s Spotlight is a mixture of carefully selected festival favorites from around the globe, highly anticipated releases, a number of new works by high profile filmmakers and films with subjects of special note.” Of the 33 selections, 16 are documentaries and 17 are narrative features. Amongst the bunch there’s God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, a documentary about the king of darkness produced by his son, Jack. You can also find Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut, Higher Ground and the Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington-starrer, Last Night.
As for the eight films in the Cinemania portion of the festival, Terranova said, “we really kick it up a notch with boundary-pushing genre films packed with action, sexy thrills, and an extra helping of blood and guts for good measure.” There’s TROLLHUNTER about a group of film students who spend some time with the man responsible for keeping an eye on the country’s troll population, Rabies, Israel’s very first slash horror film and much more.
