According to CinemaBlend, Eddie Murphy will receive the Inaugural Comedy Icon Award. The award will be given during the Comedy Awards to air on Comedy Central (including Spike TV, CMT, TV Land, Logo and Nick At Nite) on April 10.
The award is given to a person who has made “an extraordinary contribution to comedy and whose impact and innovations have changed the landscape and inspired future generations of entertainers.”
Murphy may have become more family-friendly, what with roles like “Daddy Day Care” and “Dr. Doolittle”. But, Murphy is one of the great comedy trailblazers, with his 1980s comedy specials “Raw” and “Delirious”. He also starred in some of the biggest movies of the ’80s, such as the “Beverly Hills Cop” series, “Coming to America”, and “Harlem Nights”.
One of Murphy’s latest movie roles that gained him Oscar buzz was his role as James “Thunder” Early in the glitzy musical “Dreamgirls”.
The first annual Comedy Awards will have a bevy of comedy stars as attendees and presenters, including Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, John Stewart, Matt Stone, Trey Parker, Tracy Morgan, Ty Burrell, Stephen Colbert, Louis C.K., Robert Corddry, Andy Samberg, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. Since this is a show set to become part of the award season landscape, it might turn out to be one of the year’s biggest (or, at least, the most entertaining) award highlights.
