According to CinemaBlend, another “Narnia” film is in the works. This film will be based on the book, “The Magician’s Nephew”.
Oddly enough, this film is being made even though the last film, “Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, was lukewarm at best at the box office. In any case, the performance warranted that another “Narnia” film is not what the American public really wanted. But, according to the article, the overseas stats for the film were gigantic, which prompted the decision to make another film.
Also, the book “The Magician’s Nephew” is, according to the article, a prequel of sorts to the whole “Narnia” saga. So, what that means to me is that perhaps the studio is trying to revive the franchise by having a whole new “origin” movie and/or trying to compete with films like “Pirates of the Carribean”, which is also going through its own storytelling revitalization by telling completely new stories with Capt. Jack Sparrow and a mostly new cast.
Perhaps the latter is just a coincidence, but the fact still remains that the allure of having a “Harry Potter” like series is still attractive to studios, and the right property for the job is the Holy Grail every studio aims of discovering. Is it “Narnia”? Perhaps a few years ago, but, as the American box office performance of “The Dawn Treader” showed, everyone has forgotten about it.
