Tom Cruise has officially been cast in Universal Pictures’ upcoming sci-fi movie ‘Oblivion,’ Deadline is reporting. The news comes after the ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ actor was rumored to be attached to the movie, which is based on the Radical Publishing graphic novel and is being helmed by ‘Tron: Legacy’ director Joseph Kosinski.
‘Oblivion,’ which is set in an apocalyptic future, follows humans as they’re forced to live in clouds above Earth, which has been deemed uninhabitable. Cruise will portray a soldier who’s the only person still living on Earth, and will fight the alien life form now living on the planet. He meets a woman who crashes onto Earth in a craft, and their relationship changes his view on the world.
Universal picked up ‘Oblivion’ after Disney decided not to release it, as it has been given a PG-13 rating, instead of the PG rating the family-friendly studio wanted. The $100 million film was written by William Monahan, and Karl Gajdusek is working on script re-writes.
