Jessica Biel has signed to play Melina in director Len Wiseman’s remake of the 1990 sci-fi action movie ‘Total Recall,’ Collider is reporting. Kate Beckinsale, Wiseman’s wife and star of his directorial debut, ‘Underworld,’ has been cast as ‘Total Recall’s other female lead, Lori. Just hours after Biel and Beckinsale’s casting was confirmed, The Hollywood Reporter announced fellow ‘Underworld’ alum Billy Nighy was chosen to portray resistance leader Quatto.
The three will appear alongside the already announced Colin Farrell, who is set to portray Doug Quaid, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original film. ‘Total Recall,’ which is set to begin filming on May 30, 2011 in Toronto, will be closer to Phillip K. Dick’s novelette We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, which the story is based on. Forgoing the Mars aspect included in the original movie, the remake will follow Doug, a factory worker, who comes to believe he’s a spy for either Euromerica or New Shanghai.
In ‘Total Recall,’ which is scheduled to hit theaters on August 3, 2012, Bryan Cranston will play villain Vilos Cohaagen, the leader of Euromerica. While Vilos claims to be protecting his people, he’s secretly preparing to invade New Shanghai.
