Brendan Fraser, Matt Dillon and Craig Robinson have all been cast in writer-director Charles Matthau’s upcoming film adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel ‘Freaky Deaky’, Slashfilm is reporting. The movie, in which William H. Macy has already been cast in a main role, will follow a couple of former hippies who extort millions of dollars by using their bomb making skills. Fraser will play one of the hippies, Dillon will portray an LAPD police officer who learns of the scam, Macy was cast as the millionaire mark and Robinson is set to play his former Black Panther assistant.
Filming on ‘Freaky Deaky’ will begin filming later this month in Detroit. However, Matthau, the son of acclaimed actor Walther Matthau, has changed some of the plot elements from the novel, including setting the story in the 1960s and ’70s, instead of the ’80s.
The book follows a group who were born during the youth rebellion of the 1960s, including 38-year-old Detroit police sergeant Chris Mankowski, who was just transferred from the bomb squad to sex crimes. Meanwhile, with the help of her boyfriend Skip Gibbs, ex-con Robin Abbott plans on making a million dollar movie based on the alcoholic Woody Ricks and his ex-Black Panther driver Donnell Lewis. Gibbs later reports to Chris that Woody assaulted Robin, and he pursues the investigation. Chris is later suspended from the force because of Woody’s influence.
