To celebrate what would have been the 92nd birthday of one of the most celebrated children’s authors of all time, Richard Scarry, today’s Google Doodle features some of the writer’s characters. Replacing the search engine’s logo on its homepage, the Doodle replicates a small village from Scarry’s book series ‘Busytown’. The scene includes such characters as the pedaling Huckle Cat and the Lowly Worm, working and living in perfect harmony.
Scarry, who was born in Boston on June 5, 1919, was a write-illustrator who published more than 250 books. His books have sold over 100 million copies world-wide. He published his first book ‘Two Little Miners’ in 1949, as part of the Little Golden Books series. The author’s breakthrough book was ‘Best Word Book Ever’, which was released in 1963 and included approximately 1,400 illustrations.
‘Busytown’ is the author’s most well-known series, however. The series is noteworthy, as Scarry gave human characteristics to an endless number of animals, including cats, dogs, rabbits, elephants, foxes, wolves and insects. Scarry once said that “it’s a precious thing to be communicating to children, helping them discover the gift of language and thought.”
The series was adapted into an animated series, titled ‘The Busy World of Richard Scarry,’ which originally aired on Showtime between 1993 and 1996. The show ‘Busytown Mysteries’ was later commissioned by CBC Television in 2007.
