The upcoming biopic about Beach Boys chief leader and songwriter Brian Wilson will be scripted by writer/director Oren Moverman, Collider is reporting. The helmer of ‘The Messenger’ was hired shortly after producers Bill Pohlad and John Wells acquired the life rights from Wilson and his wife, Melinda.
While the producers secured the rights to most of the singer’s catalog, Pohlad said the movie won’t just feature the Beach Boy’s hits. He added that he finds it fascinating “to look at the different elements in his life, like that super-creative period when he was doing ‘Pet Sounds’ and the later part when he was redeemed.”
Pohlad and Wells have yet to cast the movie, but the two are considering multiple actors to portray Wilson. The movie will likely follow Wilson’s rise to fame while creating such hits as ‘Surfin’ U.S.A.,’ ‘I Get Around’ and ‘California Girls.’ The film will also likely focus on Wilson working on the 1966 record ‘Pet Sounds,’ which is largely regarded as one of pop’s most important records for it’s unconventional harmonies and sound effects. But Wilson’s luck turned throughout the 1970s and ’80s, as he battled substance abuse and mental illness.
The producers promise that people unfamiliar with Wilson’s music will still like the movie. “What we want to do s let you experience the story in a personal way,” Pohlad said.
