‘Horrible Bosses’ director Seth Gordon has been hired to helm the upcoming MGM remake of the 1983 thriller ‘War Games,’ Deadline is reporting. The original film was helmed by John Badham and starred Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy as David Lightman and Jennifer Mack, computer prodigies who hacked into a military computer program. While the two innocently believe they’re just playing a computer game at first, they soon realize they could trigger World War III if the computer launches nuclear missiles at Russia.
MGM has yet to hire a screenwriter or a cast for the new ‘War Games’ yet, as it’s still early in development. But Gordon will be reuniting with MGM producers Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jon Glickman for the ‘War Games’ remake; the three worked for Spyglass when Gordon directed the 2008 romantic comedy ‘Four Christmases.’
The Academy Award-nominated original ‘War Games’ became a box-office success when it was released. While computer hacking seemed like a sci-fi concept at the time, people became afraid of political instability and technological dependence.
The ‘War Games’ reboot marks the latest film to be remade by MGM. The studio recently hired Jose Padilha to helm the new ‘Robocop,’ and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the script for the ‘Carrie’ remake.
