Universal Pictures has confirmed the upcoming sixth installment of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ franchise, tentatively titled ‘Fast and Furious 6,’ will be released over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend, on May 24, ComingSoon is reporting. The news comes after the latest installment, ‘Fast Five,’ grossed nearly $600 million at the box office worldwide when it was released in April 2011. The amount contributes to the franchise’s $1.5 billion international gross.
There’s no word yet if director Justin Lin, who helmed the previous three movies in the franchise, ‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,’ ‘Fast and Furious’ and ‘Fast Five,’ will return for the fifth sequel. But he’s previously discussed finishing the trilogy that began with ‘Fast and Furious.’ There’s also no word yet who from ‘Fast Five’s ensemble cast would be returning for ‘Fast and Furious 6,’ but it’s likely Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson will all reprise their roles.
‘Fast and Furious 6’ is the third movie that’s already been scheduled for a May 2013 release. Another Universal film, Ron Howard’s ‘The Dark Tower,’ is scheduled for release on May 17. Disney’s ‘Iron Man 3,’ directed by Shane Black and featuring returning franchise stars Robert Downey, Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, is scheduled for release on May 3.
