Scott Wilson and Lauren Cohen have been cast as father and daughter Hershel and Maggie Green in the upcoming second season of ‘The Walking Dead,’ TVGuide is reporting. The two characters are fan favorites from the graphic novels on which the hit AMC show is based.
The post-apocalyptic horror series’ main character, Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, and his followers encounter Hershel and Maggie, whose family has been ravaged by zombies. The majority of the second season, which will premiere in October 2011 for Halloween, will take place on Hershel’s Farm.
Wilson, who is primarily remembered to television audiences for playing Catherine’s biological father on ‘CSI,’ was cast as Hershel because of his “tremendous scope and gravitas,” executive producer Gale Anne Hurd said. Hershel is described as the patriarch of the Greene family, and is “a veterinarian with a great sense of humanity and a very unique take on the Walkers,” Hurd added. Hershel will also experience great heartache after losing many of his family members.
Maggie is described as Hershel’s sharp, self-reliant daughter, one of his few children who survive the zombie attack. She is also going to serve as a love interest for Glenn, played by Steven Yuen. Hurd said Yuen’s “very excited” to be acting alongside the ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Vampire Diaries’ and ‘Chuck’ star.
