“Larry Crowne” was released last Saturday in the hopes of catching the crowds who were ready for lighthearted romance. However, the critics have given the shaft to this film, giving it a 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The main issue cited by many of the critics is that while the leads–Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks–provide the star quality the movie needs to attract an audience, the film itself does not sizzle. In fact, according to the site’s consensus, the movie is surprisingly bland and uninteresting. Other notes from critics include the opinions that the emotional development doesn’t seem realistic, the film moves along at too gentle of a pace, and doesn’t provide real comforting satisfaction people look for when they go to see rom-coms.
However, even while many critics have panned the plot, they still give props to Hanks and Roberts, who still are their charming, lovable selves. To some, the film’s entire success rides on the backs of these two.
But I’ll put it to you: if you’ve seen “Larry Crowne,” what did you think about it? Do you feel that the movie is too safe? Or did you find the film a rather enjoyable way to ease into your Fourth of July weekend? Sound off below in the comments section.
My wife and I enjoyed the movie-a very pleasnant 2 hours.
It was awful. She never taught the students anything. The characters were poorly developed. The chemistry was missing. It was draggy. I love movies and there are less and less for my age group. I knew it did not get good reviews, but decided to see it any way. I should have waited for it to be on TV.
I really have to blame the writing for the lack of quality. I expected much more from Mr. Hanks.
