The remake of “Judge Dredd” is long overdue. The new take on the gritty comic book character is not due in theaters until early in 2012 in the States but will be released on December 1st in the UK. In 1995, Sylvester Stallone starred as the hard edged police officer to very little fanfare and low box office receipts.

Karl Urban will play the lead in this remake and from the looks of things. In the new film, simply title “Dredd,” it looks like there this will be taking a more serious approach to the character and story. One thing from the comic book that wasn’t translated well to the 1995 movie was the character of Judge Dredd never takes off this helmet. Many fanboys of this comic book series found this approach to be one of the worse offensives of the 1995 movie. From the sound of things, it looks like Karl Urban will stay true to the character by not taking off his helmet for the entire movie.

“Dredd” will be directed by Pete Travis and was written by Alex Garland. It will also feature Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby and Domhnall Gleeson.
