The Wrap has broke the news that the adaption of Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’ series if officially a no-go. The once promising project, that included three movies and a television series, was cancelled by Universal without comment. Since last year the studio giant did make attempts to contain the pricey production, cutting costs here and there, but without success some are saying, which possibly led to the Dark Towers franchise coming to a close. At this point no-one is talking about the failed adaption, leaving fans with only assumptions and hope that someone else will want to tackle the hefty project.
When the Stephen King series was first announced followers were excited with the news that Ron Howard would be helming the first movie with the help of producer and writers Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer. Actor Javier Bardem was said to be taking the lead role.
“We worked on it for a year before we even met with [Stephen King],” Hero Complex quoted Howard as saying back in 2010 “It was all about putting something together that was good enough and getting such an understanding of the material that Stephen King would say, ‘Yes, that’s the way into this story.”
Most important to all of this is that King still has his eighth book, ‘The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole’, on the way. Due out sometime in 2012, King’s upcoming chapters could inspire a screen adaption from another studio with ambition, and a serious budget to do the incredible story justice.
