Title: Scream of the Banshee
Directed by: Steven C. Miller
Starring: Lauren Holly and Lance Henriksen
Running time: 90 minutes / Rated R
A college professor and her two students discover an ornate box containing the severed head of a banshee, which is still not quite dead. According to Irish lore, anyone who hears the scream will die. Mysterious deaths begin to occur to those within the vicinity when the box was opened, or who have heard the recording of the scream.
It’s a Syfy movie, so you gotta just roll the dice and see if it’s a total campy horror flick or something brilliant. With exception to the bloody severed head in the box, the rest of the creature make-up is almost Muppet-like. The whole premise was really predictable. Once they learn how to survive from being killed by the banshee, they still try to go after it and it’s not really necessary. They could basically live amongst the banshee, but they end up getting more people killed by trying to get rid of it just because they don’t like the bad acid trip hallucinations and ear bleeding whenever the banshee comes near them. Aw, boo-hoo.
The DVD cover will entice men to check out, but trust me; there is no side boob to be found, just some old fashioned cleavage. What a rip. The special features option of the DVD consists of a commentary by director Steven C. Miller and composer Ryan Dodson.
Scream of the Banshee is a time killer. It’s not a great movie, or even good. Maybe if they went more into the lore of the banshee, I might’ve been more interested, but with a limited budget, that wasn’t going to happen. The acting was not good at all, but that comes to be expected with a horror movie, so I’ll overlook that. I wasn’t even into the movie enough to even bother thinking of other ways to improve it.
