In the midst of a summer drowning in studio superhero movies, how about one that’s a little more authentic? We’ve got another film courtesy of the HBO Documentary Summer Series on the way and this one features some real crime fighters.
Superheroes focuses on real-life superheroes (RLSH). There are more than 300 registered in the US that suit up in homemade costumes and hit the streets to take down local evildoers. The film centers on Mr. Extreme, a hero that patrols the streets of San Diego in neon and camouflage, as well as the members of Brooklyn’s New York Initiative as they strive to eradicate crime. There are also interviews with Stan Lee, Lt. Andrea Brown, a young member of the San Diego Police Department, and Robin Rosenberg, a psychologist who’s done extensive work exploring the psychology of superheroes, both RLSH and the characters Lee’s created.
The film doesn’t debut until Monday, August 8th at 9:00pm ET/PT, but, in the meantime, you can get a taste of what Superheroes has to offer in the trailer and images below.
